A fire blanket is an invaluable tool. It can safely and easily put out any kind of fire as long as you know how to use it correctly. A new blanket will carry instructions on the packet. But not many people take the time to read it. So when it comes time to use the blanket, they are not quite sure what to do. So they use it the wrong way and it doesn’t work, or they end up injuring themselves.
As you can see, it is important to understand how to use the blanket for the safety of yourself and your family. Let’s take a look at the different factors involved in getting the best results from your blanket.
How to Use a Fire Blanket
Protect your Hands
The first step before you even handle the blanket is to use fire-resistant gloves. These normally come with the blanket itself. If you don’t wear the gloves, the blanket will get too hot in your hands and you will let go or will not be able to wrap it properly around the fire as you will be worried about your hands. If you don’t have fire-resistant gloves or they are not around, you can use your oven mitts.
Using the Fire Blanket
Ensure that the blanket is fully unfolded. A new fire safety blanket will come with two ribbons or tabs which you simply have to tug hard to unfold the blanket without hassle. There is a section at the corners of the blanket where you have insert your hands for better grip and protection. If there is no separate pocket stitched into the fabric, simply wrap your hands around the edge to ensure that you do not get hurt in the process of saving someone else.
The fire exists because of air, fuel and heat. You cut out one and the fire is gone. That is the primary goal of the blanket. To put out the fire by cutting off the air supply. Do not throw the blanket on the flames. Approach the fire carefully with the blanket between you and the flames and ensure that the blanket covers the fire completely, not allowing air to enter from any nooks or openings.
Other Tips
Professional establishments usually have large-sized blankets. These are not practical for home use as the extra bulk will be inconvenient to store and hard to use effectively. So get a size that is appropriate for you.
After use, the blanket must be left out in the open for at least half an hour to cool down. Do not touch it or fold it until it has completely cooled off.
If the fire is too large for you to handle, if it is growing steadily at an alarming rate, or if you are too panicky or shaky, it’s best to call the fire department for help. A blanket can only do so much. Do not try to tame an inferno by yourself. Let the professionals take care of it.
