There is no doubt at all that crime is rates are higher than ever. It was once believed that crime was a by-product of city life, and that the suburbs or residential areas were safe. Even people living in cities in housing complexes think that they are safe when they get home and lock themselves in. But criminals today will not think twice before breaking into your home. Stories abound everyday of burglaries, rapes and murders taking place in the victims’ own home.
Security experts have shamelessly taken advantage of the situation by claiming that home alarm systems can save the day. Or in this case, save you and your family from becoming victims of a crime. But how far is this true? Do you really need a home security system?
Do We Need Home Alarm Systems?
A few decades ago, people didn’t even lock their doors at night. Now, we’d get a panic attack just considering doing that. Today’s world is a far cry from ‘back in the day’. Let’s face it – the world is a beautiful but dangerous place. There aren’t enough people in law enforcement to patrol every street day and night. So it’s up to you to go the extra mile to make life safer at home.
Some folks suggest buying guard dogs for protection. But dogs can be fed poisoned meat by a wily criminal who has been watching the lay of the land before striking.
You could reinforce the doors and windows. But today’s technology means there are compact silent tools that a burglar can use to slice through windows and deadbolts alike.
A home alarm system is definitely a value addition. In case of a break-in, the system will set off a loud noise that is annoying and piercing, thus alerting the police and the neighbors that something’s not quite right.
Home alarms do more than just provide a little extra security. Depending on the features the security company offers you, you can be intimated when the kids come home from school or if there is no movement for a considerable period of time in the in an elderly or ailing relative’s room. You can also ‘inform’ or ‘call’ the system when you are on your way home from work so the lights will be on when you pull into the driveway. The little things that a home alarm can do go a long way in making life just a little more comfortable or giving you just a little more peace of mind.
Although they will do nothing to stop crime, the very presence of an alarm system has been known to sometimes deter criminal acts or at the least prevent the worst from happening. But no matter how expensive or feature-heavy your security system, it will be in vain if you do not have common sense, a responsive public law enforcement system, and a few good neighbors who will come to your aid while the police are on the way.
